Willie Hugh Nelson was born in Abbott (Texas) in 1933 and is a musician, singer, songwriter, author, poet, actor, and activist. He went on to become a key figure in outlaw country; a subgenre of country music that was developed in the late 1960s as a reaction to the conservative restrictions of the Nashville sound. He created a unique musical style by blending country music with a hybrid of jazz, pop, blues, rock, and folk. He has had a stellar career with 68 studio albums, 10 live albums, 37 compilation albums, 2 soundtrack albums, 110 singles, 35 music videos. He’s appeared in over 30 films (The Electric Horseman, Barbarosa, Honeysuckle Rose, and many more), and he’s also written 7 books. He’s received many accolades including 11 Grammy Awards, 7 American Music Awards, 9 Country Music Association Awards, 5 Academy of Country Music Awards, 2 TNN/Music City News Awards, and 2 Broadcast Music Incorporated awards. He was included in both of Rolling Stone magazine’s lists of 100 Greatest Singers and 100 Greatest Guitarists and he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1993.
