Sensational rock, funk, and metal artists Primus and Mastodon are bringing their signature sounds to the Hearst Greek Theatre!
Primus was formed (under the moniker Primate) in El Sobrante (California) in 1984 by singer and bassist Les Claypool along with guitarist Todd Huth. They had trouble finding a drummer at first so they started off with a LinnDrum drum machine. When Les’ friend Vince "Perm" Parker returned from a stint in the army, they recruited him as their drummer, changed their name to Primus (after a group called the Primates threatened them with legal action) and recorded their first demo tape. The band’s been through many line up changes over the years and it currently consists of Les (lead vocals and bass), Larry "Ler" LaLonde (guitar and backing vocals), and Tim "Herb" Alexander (drums and backing vocals). Their musical style can be best described as a blend of experimental rock, funk metal, progressive rock (a broad subgenre of rock music that grew out of psychedelic bands who abandoned standard traditions in favour of instrumentation and compositional techniques more frequently associated with jazz, folk or classical music), and alternative metal. They’ve had a stellar career with 9 studio albums, 1 live album, 1 compilation album, 7 video albums, 16 music videos, 4 extended plays, and 21 singles.
